New Poll: Big Island of Hawai‘i Support TMT 2–1

New Poll: Big Island of Hawai‘i Support TMT 2–1

Update:  The polling done by Ward Research was done for n=404 respondents, maximum margin of error of +/- 4.9% at 95% confidence level.  The sample chart shown below of Caucasian, Hawaiian and Japanese only total 299 because there were other ethnicities not shown the chart purely for simplicity reasons.  Those excluded 105 respondents excluded: Chinese, 1%; Filipino, 9%; Mixed, 9%; Other, 4%; and refused to identify, 3%. The results of a new scientific poll show that Hawai‘i Island residents support the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. The public opinion poll conducted in July 2016 by Ward Research Inc. shows that 60% of Hawai‘i Island’s residents support moving ahead with construction of the TMT project, with 31% opposed. In a previous scientific poll taken in October 2015, 59% of Hawai‘i Island’s residents supported moving ahead with TMT construction, while 39% were opposed to it. “It was important for us to understand how Hawai‘i Island residents feel about the project, and the latest poll results demonstrate that opposition to TMT on Hawai‘i Island is decreasing,” said TMT Executive Director Ed Stone. “That’s significant and we are most grateful that the community’s support of the project remains high. The findings also show that the general public on Hawai‘i Island understands the benefits TMT will bring in terms of Hawaii’s economy and education, both of which are very important to TMT.” The poll’s key findings: 89% of Hawai‘i Island residents agree there should be a way for science and Hawaiian culture to co-exist on Maunakea 76% of Hawai‘i Island residents agree that TMT will help create good paying jobs and...
Latest Poll Shows Increase in TMT Support

Latest Poll Shows Increase in TMT Support

National media coverage of the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (“TMT”) has consistently reported that Native Hawaiians are against its construction. We from Perpetuating Unique Educational Opportunities, Inc. (“PUEO”) strongly disagree with these claims. Latest polling on Oahu shows not only a majority of voters support the TMT project, but support from Native Hawaiians has grown into a majority. PUEO is buoyed by the news of poll numbers conducted by Ward Research for the Star Advertiser showing 76% support for TMT with 57% of Native Hawaiians in favor. As we have stated, PUEO hopes to bring a vision of clarity and unity to the process through the perpetuation of unique educational opportunities for our children. We believe that our voice of inclusiveness is getting heard in our communities, and that moving forward with aloha, and integrating culture and science are in the best interests for Hawai`i’s future. PUEO is a Native Hawaiian led non-profit dedicated to enhancing and creating educational opportunities for Hawaii’s youth and their communities. PUEO’s focus on bridging traditional knowledge and scientific opportunities are specific to Hawaii and Hawaiian Culture. In addition to the restoration of the voyaging canoe, Hokualakai, we also provide opportunities for kids to engage in hands-on, inter-disciplinary learning environments. Our intent is based on a unifying vision of Hawaiian language, culture, science, technology and exploration. PUEO seeks to provide and enhance the opportunities for our children to continue the Hawaiian tradition and culture of exploration and learning to all members of our communities. PUEO recognizes the importance of Hawaii’s children to seek knowledge from all sources in order to survive and...
Governor Ige Meets with PUEO Leaders

Governor Ige Meets with PUEO Leaders

Governor Ige met briefly with leaders of PUEO to explain their role in the community and the types of educational and cultural opportunities each member has been providing and how they would like to see programs expanded in the future.  This includes programs that are not just astronomy related.  Keahi Warfield, president of PUEO, expressed how important it was to have a range of scientific fields participating in the educational process.  His desire is to offer programs spanning educational fields from the ocean to the mountaintops. It’s very important to have options for kids so they can pursue the activities they find interesting.  Perhaps they’re more interested in hunting and Wildlife and Game Management might be what they prefer to study.  We need more educational fields like Fisheries, Geology, Biology, as well as Astronomy, Math and Physics.  These are the types of programs we want to build for the next generations. Governor Ige listened intently as each member discussed their background and their vision of how to move the people of Hawaii forward, away from homelessness, drugs and poverty through creating educational opportunities.  In addition they stressed that longterm plans are needed to create new industries that would help prevent the “Brain Drain” of Hawaii’s youth where they leave for better education and jobs. The meeting was opened up to the astronomy community where multiple students and teachers spoke of the unique educational opportunities that led them to become interest in scientific fields.  They also discussed how they see the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) as a key part of increasing Hawaii’s role in leading science and...

Second educational trip to to Mauna Kea!

Keahi led our second educational trip up to Mauna Kea for PUEO kids was yesterday! Mahalo to Guenther Hasinger, Astronomer and UH Institute for Astronomy Director who helped guide the group visit to the top and NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility, W. M. Keck Observatory, and the 2.2m UH Telescope. Guenther also gave a presentation about astronomy, careers and history of telescopes at Hale Pohaku. Educational opportunities like these are priceless. Everyone had a lot of fun too while learning Maunakea’s role in leading the world’s scientific discoveries and how they can play a critical part in the future!...

Big Mahalo Hawaii Island Contractors Association and Individual Donors!

MAHALO!  We’ve had more donations come in than we expected and we ran out of t-shirts for the on-line orders!  Thanks to Hawaii Island Contractors Association for giving the first monetary donation to PUEO.   We have to apologize as we are trying to catchup to all the people who’ve pledged money or help.  Just because you haven’t heard back from us yet doesn’t mean we aren’t extremely grateful. We are in the process of forming our thank you letters and our receipts for those that have donated and more t-shirts are at the shop on order right now.  Those that ordered them hang in there!  They are coming! In the meantime we are working on developing our educational programs and getting our message out for everyone to share.  Expect to hear more on this in the upcoming weeks. Of course we are also working on our contribution to the TMT case that will take place in August and we wouldn’t even be here doing this if it wasn’t for the support of the very generous pro bono work from TORKILDSON, KATZ, MOORE, HETHERINGTON & HARRIS Attorneys At Law, A Law Corporation. We’re excited to move forward with Hawaii and we expect 2016 to be a great year thanks to everyone’s continued support! Every little bit helps....
